Just 5 minutes

Updated: Nov 4, 2019

This experiment only involved the addition of five minutes of physical activity within a classroom. This small amount of time was tested to see if the same results would appear even with the reduced amount of time. Within a forty-five minute lecture there would be a five-minute break that would allow for a physical activity to be performed by all the students. After, their attention towards the material being taught in the classroom would be measured. This on-task behavior increased once the five-minute classroom-based physical activity was systematically induced. In addition to this result, the inclusion of the five-minute exercise also increased the physical activity within students. After testing a range of ages within a school, physical activity did indeed improve students' cognitive functioning, in spite of the time. In conclusion, “the inclusion of physical-based activity programmes in schools creates an ideal environment not just for attaining positive learning results but also for effectively implementing learned ideas in the classroom”(Podnar).
